What are condensates?
If 1 ton per hour of steam is supplied to a piece of equipment for a heating process, then the same amount of condensate (1 ton per hour) must be discharged from the equipment.
Condensate recovery involves reusing both the water and the sensible heat present in the discharged condensate.
Instead of disposing of condensate, recovering it can generate significant savings in energy, treatment chemicals and fresh water.
Condensate can be reused in several ways, for example:
- As hot water that flows back into the boiler, reducing heating energy requirements
- For preheating in a compatible system.
- As steam, by reusing the flash steam.
- As hot water, for equipment cleaning or other applications.
Why are condensate tanks recommended in any installation?
Reusing condensate can generate significant energy and water savings, improve working conditions and reduce the plant’s carbon footprint.
- Reduced Energy Costs: Condensate retains 10% to 30% of the sensible heat of the original steam. Using hot condensate as boiler feed reduces the energy required to generate steam, which can reduce fuel consumption by up to 2/3.
- Reduced Water-Related Costs: If impurities are removed, condensate can be reused as boiler feedwater, reducing fresh water and treatment costs, as well as condensate cooling costs prior to disposal.
- Positive Impact on Safety and Environment: Recovering condensate decreases emissions of pollutants such as CO2, NOx and SOx, as less fuel is needed. It also reduces the formation of vapor clouds, reduces noise and avoids the formation of puddles in the plant, improving the working environment.
Other benefits include fewer boiler blowdowns and less system corrosion due to better feedwater quality.
