It appears earlier\u2014and silently\u2014in energy consumption. <\/p>\n\n<p>The scale buildup on the heat exchange surfaces acts as a thermal insulator. A layer just one millimeter thick is enough to require the equipment to use more energy to produce the same steam flow; industry standards place this excess energy consumption at around <strong>2%<\/strong> for every millimeter of deposit. In a generator that operates <strong>4,000 hours a year<\/strong>, that figure is far from negligible. And the process is cumulative: the scale reduces heat transfer, which raises the wall temperature of the heating element or tube, which in turn accelerates the degradation of the heating element itself. When a failure occurs, it is not the cause of the problem but rather its final consequence.    <\/p>\n\n<p>The second cost is unscheduled downtime. A steam boiler is rarely just an auxiliary piece of equipment: it powers autoclaves, shrink tunnels, sterilization lines, cooking processes, or cleaning systems. When it shuts down, it doesn\u2019t stop on its own. A dirty level electrode\u2014a fifteen-minute fix if caught in time\u2014can trigger a safety shutdown of an entire line in the middle of a production run.   <\/p>\n\n<p>The third is strictly regulatory. Royal Decree 809\/2021 assigns to the user\u2014not the manufacturer or installer\u2014the obligation to retain the equipment\u2019s documentation, keep it in safe working order, and have it undergo the applicable periodic inspections. Equipment without a documented history or with expired inspections is at risk during an inspection by the Department of Industry and, more importantly, when dealing with an insurance company in the event of a claim.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the Law Requires: RD 809\/2021 and ITC EP-1<\/h2>\n\n<p>The current regulatory framework in Spain is Royal Decree 809\/2021, which approved the Pressure Equipment Regulation and replaced the previous Royal Decree 2060\/2008. When that date cannot be reliably verified, the date on the installation certificate is used as a reference. Each successful inspection must be recorded on the periodic inspection plate specified in Annex III of the Regulation and in the equipment\u2019s maintenance record.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Registration, Documentation, and Category<\/h2>\n\n<p>In addition to the inspections, the user must have the equipment registered in the relevant autonomous community\u2019s facility registry and keep the complete file on file: the EU Declaration of Conformity and CE marking, the instruction manual, electrical and plumbing diagrams, the installation certificate, and records of all inspections and repairs.<\/p>\n\n<p>One nuance that significantly affects practical requirements: not all boilers are subject to the same regulatory requirements. The equipment category is determined in accordance with Directive 2014\/68\/EU (PED) based on the product of the maximum allowable pressure and volume. A compact, low-volume generator may be classified in a lower category\u2014or even below Category I\u2014which, in the latter case, exempts the user from the periodic inspection and registration requirements set forth in Article 9 of the Regulation. This is one of the reasons why a modular design\u2014with several smaller units instead of a single large boiler\u2014not only provides process flexibility but also results in a less burdensome regulatory profile.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Industrial Boiler Operator<\/h2>\n\n<p>ITC EP-1 classifies boilers and establishes the cases in which their operation requires direct supervision by an operator certified as an industrial boiler operator. Automatic steam generators, equipped with automatic level and water feed controls and the corresponding low-level and overpressure alarms, are considered to require indirect supervision: they do not require the permanent presence of an operator next to the equipment. It is advisable to verify this classification with the manufacturer before determining the size of the boiler room staff, because the difference between direct and indirect supervision has an annual impact on personnel costs that is much greater than that of maintenance itself.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Operational Maintenance Plan<\/h2>\n\n<p>Regulatory requirements set the minimum standard. The maintenance plan that truly preserves the equipment is measured in operating hours, not calendar years. The replacement water that enters after flushing is rich in dissolved oxygen. If the operation is performed in the afternoon, that water remains inside the pressure vessel all night, at a decreasing temperature and with the equipment shut down\u2014ideal conditions for corrosion. When done in the morning, the equipment goes into service immediately, and the oxygen is degassed during startup. It\u2019s a decision that costs nothing and translates into years of additional service life for the pressure vessel.    <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Water quality: the cause of 80% of breakdowns<\/h2>\n\n<p>If there is one single factor that determines the service life of a steam boiler, it is the feedwater. The relevant standard is UNE-EN 12952-12, which establishes the quality requirements for feedwater and boiler water. <\/p>\n\n<p>For standard electric generators, the reference values are a pH at <strong>25 \u00b0C<\/strong> between <strong>10.5<\/strong> and <strong>12<\/strong> and a direct conductivity of <strong>30 \u00b5S\/cm<\/strong> or less. The water must also be supplied at a minimum temperature of <strong>18 \u00b0C<\/strong>; below this threshold, preheating is necessary to prevent thermal shock to the pressure vessel and the heating elements. <\/p>\n\n<p>It is important to be explicit about one point that often leads to warranty disputes: compliance with these requirements is not a recommendation; it is a condition of use. Damage resulting from feeding the equipment with water that does not meet specifications\u2014such as scaling, corrosion, pitting, or perforation of heating elements\u2014is not a manufacturing defect and is not covered by any manufacturer\u2019s warranty.
