It is in the reused substrate from the previous season and in the growing trays that are returned to the circuit without any real treatment. Fungi, nematodes, phytopathogenic bacteria, viruses and weed seeds travel from one cycle to the next and appear when it is already too late: shrinkage in the nascence, weak seedlings, disease outbreaks that force treatment and, in the worst case, entire batches to be thrown away.

The good news is that there is a tool that is as old as it is effective for cutting that cycle, and it is back at the center of the debate for a very current reason: water vapor.

The problem of continuing to rely on chemistry

For decades, soil and substrate disinfection relied on fumigants such as methyl bromide. Its phasing out, agreed under the Montreal Protocol because of its effect on the ozone layer, left the industry looking for alternatives. Those that remained – methyl sodium bromide and other synthetic fumigants – have their own drawbacks: they leave residues in the environment, require waiting periods before planting can be resumed, are subject to increasingly strict restrictions on use and pose handling risks for the operator.

In contrast, steam heat treatment offers a radically different approach: it does not add anything to the substrate, only applies heat to it. There is no chemical residue, no safety time and it can be grown again immediately. In fact, the Methyl Bromide Technical Options Committee (MBTOC) itself, within the United Nations environmental program, recognizes steam as the substitute that has replaced methyl bromide in the sterilization of substrates in most developed countries.

How steam disinfects (and why it works so well)

The mechanism is simple to understand but requires precision to get it right. Saturated steam gives up a large amount of energy as it condenses on each substrate particle, raising its temperature rapidly and, above all, homogeneously: it penetrates through the pore space and reaches areas that a surface treatment would never touch. Maintaining the mass above a certain temperature threshold for a certain time is what denatures the proteins of pathogenic organisms and inactivates them.

The key is to understand that we are not always looking for the same objective. It is convenient to distinguish three levels:

Pasteurization: moderate temperatures that eliminate the most sensitive pathogens (some bacteria, molds and fungi) while preserving part of the beneficial microbiota.

Disinfection: eliminates pathogenic elements in the substrate (fungi, bacteria, nematodes, weed seeds).

Sterilization: destroys all forms of microbial life. It is the most energy demanding treatment and, in agronomy, not always the most desirable.

This last nuance is important: eliminating absolutely everything is not always the best for the crop. A totally sterile substrate is left without biological defenses and can be quickly recolonized by the first opportunists that arrive. That is why the objective is almost never to “cook” the substrate to the maximum, but to find the right temperature window.

Temperature and time: the working window

Temperature range

Indicative time

What is monitored

45-50 °C

~30 min

Some more sensitive fungi and nematodes

50-70 °C

~30 min

Most phytopathogenic bacteria, filamentous fungi, molds, worms, slugs and nematodes

~82 °C

~30 min

Efficient pasteurization; also weed seeds

80-100 °C

30-45 min

Intense disinfection of the entire mass

Be careful not to overdo it. Above ~90-93 °C the substrate structure can be degraded and phytotoxic compounds released. More heat is not better: fine temperature control is what separates a well-done treatment from one that harms the subsequent crop. Hence the importance of working with a temperature probe and controlled set point, and not “by eye”.

Not only the substrate: the culture trays also contaminate the soil

This is a point that many farms overlook. Seedling trays and reusable containers are a vector of contagion of the first order: between their walls, alveoli and joints there are remains of soil, roots and algae films where Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and various viruses survive perfectly, and if these trays return to the circuit without a real treatment, they cancel out a good part of the effort to disinfect the substrate.

Chemical baths reach the nooks and crannies poorly and leave residue. Steam, on the other hand, reaches every corner by direct contact, leaves no residue and allows the tray to be reused almost instantly. Applied in a tunnel, cabin or by means of steam lances, it is the cleanest way to close the hygiene circle between campaigns.

The game changer: doing it with electric steam

Traditionally, steam for agricultural disinfection was generated with oil or gas boilers: on-site combustion, emissions, fuel storage, burner maintenance and coarser temperature control.

The electric steam generator turns that approach on its head and fits with the direction the entire industry is taking:

No combustion at the farm: zero direct emissions at the point of use and a real step in the decarbonization of the activity, especially if the electricity comes from renewable sources or solar self-consumption.

Precision control: temperature and pressure are precisely regulated, just what the substrate treatment needs to stay in the right window without “over firing”.

Clean and simple operation: fast start-up, automatic operation, no fuel storage or burner management.

Mobility: mounted on a skid, the equipment can be moved around the greenhouse or threshing floor and treat the substrate wherever it is needed.

Giconmes’ solution: the DFTerm system

At Giconmes we have integrated all of the above in an equipment specifically designed for this application, based on our NGV-17xx series:

Configurable electric steam generator from 7 to 15 kW, fully automatic, which grows with the needs of the farm.

Steam tube with diffuser nozzles and temperature probe, which ensure that the steam reaches the entire substrate mass and that the treatment is controlled to the desired set point.

Water treatment system to protect the durability of the generator.

Thermally insulated container and skid platform, to treat the substrate in batches and move the assembly safely.

All our equipment is manufactured in accordance with the European Pressure Equipment Directive (2014/68/EU) and the applicable Spanish regulations.

In a nutshell

Steam disinfecting the substrate and growing trays is a proven, environmentally friendly and residue-free way to break the cycle of pests and diseases between seasons. Properly applied – with just the right temperature and reliable control – it protects nascence and crop health without the drawbacks of chemical fumigants. And doing it with an electric generator also turns a good agronomic practice into a concrete step towards cleaner and decarbonized production.

Do you want to know which configuration fits with the volume of substrate and the type of cultivation of your farm? At Giconmes we help you to size the system.

Steam is an effective and sustainable solution for disinfecting substrates and culture trays, eliminating pathogens without using chemicals or generating waste.
