However, it is becoming increasingly costly and complex to manage. <strong>Reducing its consumption<\/strong> not only <strong>saves money<\/strong>, but also <strong>improves the<\/strong> company&#8217; <strong>s environmental sustainability<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Steam<\/strong>, thanks to its unique properties, is a great ally for <strong>optimizing water use and minimizing waste<\/strong>. In this article we review five key strategies to reduce water consumption in industrial processes using steam, accompanied by practical examples: <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Condensate reuse<\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/giconmes.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/condensados-vapor-1024x576.webp\" alt=\"Steam condensates\" class=\"wp-image-14267\" title=\"Giconmes industrial steam generators\" srcset=\"https:\/\/giconmes.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/condensados-vapor-1024x576.webp 1024w, https:\/\/giconmes.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/condensados-vapor-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/giconmes.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/condensados-vapor-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/giconmes.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/condensados-vapor.webp 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n<p>When the steam gives up its heat, it becomes <strong>condensate<\/strong>. This water is clean, deaerated and at a high temperature, which makes it perfect for <strong>reincorporation into the boiler circuit<\/strong>. This is known as <a href=\"https:\/\/giconmes.es\/en\/the-economic-relevance-of-condensate-reuse-in-steam-generation\/\">condensate reuse<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Among its benefits we can find:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lower first-use water withdrawal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Less chemicals for treatment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Energy saving by not having to reheat it from room temperature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Example of savings: a <strong>5,000 kg\/h<\/strong> steam installation that recovers 70% of its condensate can save <strong>more than 40,000 liters<\/strong> of first-use <strong>water<\/strong> per day, in addition to significantly reducing its energy consumption.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. With steam, consumption was reduced to 80 liters. <\/strong>achieving savings of 90% per cleaning cycle.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. CIP (Cleaning in Place) systems with steam integration<\/h2>\n\n<p>Conventional <strong>CIP<\/strong> systems require large volumes of water to carry detergents and perform rinsing. <strong>Incorporating steam into the process reduces both the amount of water and cleaning time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>What are the benefits of this system? Among others, it offers: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>lower consumption of first-use water and chemicals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Faster and safer processes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Example of savings: In a dairy plant, each CIP cycle consumed <strong>1,500 liters of water<\/strong>. <strong>After incorporating steam, consumption dropped to 1,000 liters<\/strong>, a savings of 33%, and <strong>the use of aggressive chemicals was eliminated<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Reduction of losses in the steam cycle<\/h2>\n\n<p><strong>Steam leaks <\/strong>from faulty valves or traps are invisible losses that waste water and energy. Reuse of process water for steam generation.<\/h2>\n\n<p>Many process wastewater streams are of sufficient quality to be <strong>treated and used<\/strong>.
